Santa Cruz Basilica
This monumental church dates back to 1558 and has gorgeous paintings on the ceiling. Its beautiful stained glass windows and the unbelievably lovely murals on the church ceiling, add to the prayerful ambience of the place. This magnificent church was built by the Portuguese in 1558 and was later given the status of a cathedral, by the Vatican. After the British annexed Kochi, they tore down the church. However, it regained its prominence a little over a hundred years later when Bishop Dom Gomez Ferreira built a new church on the same site, in 1887. Pope John Paul II declared the church a Basilica in 1984.

St. Francis Church
St. Francis' Church is India's oldest European place of worship. It was constructed by the Portuguese Franciscan Friars in 1503. Originally built in timber, it was reconstructed in stone in 1779 by the Dutch Protestants. Fate then took a different turn. The British converted it to an Anglican Church in 1795. Today, it is under the care of the Church of South India, one of the beneficiaries of the Church of England when it handed over its estates to the indigenous clergy, which had evolved here. Vasco da Gama's mortal remains were preserved here in 1524, but later exhumed and taken to his homeland and buried in Lisbon, Portugal. However, his tombstone remains in St. Francis' Church in Kochi as a reminiscence of his visit to the shores of India. |

Chinese Fishing Nets
These huge cantilevered fishing nets were brought here by traders from the court of Kublai Khan. Kochi's enormous, cantilevered Chinese fishing nets are a legacy bequeathed to the city by one of the very early visitors to the Malabar Coast, from the court of Kublai Khan. The nets are mounted on huge teak wood and bamboo poles, and were first erected sometime between 1350 and 1450 AD. These nets are now used extensively over the backwaters. However, the ideal place to view the nets being lowered into the sea and the catch being recovered is the Vasco da Gama Square. This is a narrow esplanade, facing the beach. Along much of the sea front, the square is lined with small stalls selling fresh seafood, deliciously prepared, and served piping hot.
