Brief History |
Kochi comprises Fort Kochi, which occupies a seaward promontory, linked by causeway with Willingdon Island and Ernakulum on the mainland. A trading port since Roman times, Kochi was visited by Pedro Alvarez Cabral in 1500, and it was the site of a Portuguese factory established by Vasco da Gama in 1502. Alfonso de Albuquerque was appointed viceroy in 1510. St Francis Xavier made it a missionary centre in 1530. An English factory was built in 1635, but in 1663 the Dutch took Kochi until 1795, when it was taken by the British.
Kochi (Cochin), the commercial and industrial capital of Kerala, is a place where traditional culture and ethnicity exists in harmony with ultra modern developments. The secret of its wonder and allure is that while its roots lie deep in a mythological past, it has kept its finger on the pulse of today. Its cosmopolitan character is reflected in the buildings and structures. A city of peninsulas and islands, today it is Kerala's commercial hub. Kochi, earlier known as Cochin, is one of the finest natural harbours in the world. Ancient mariners from Arabia China, Holland, Britain and Portugal have all left their mark on this beautiful island city making it Kerala's prime tourist destination. It spreads across islands and promontories in a stunning location between the Arabian Sea and Backwaters. Its main sections are the modern Ernakulam in the east and the old districts of Mattancherry and Fort Cochin on a peninsula in the west, which are linked by a complex system of ferries.
This city lies at the northern end of a narrow neck of land, about 19 km (about 12 miles) long and less than 1.6 km (less than 1 mile) wide in many places, and is separated from the mainland by inlets from the sea and by the estuaries of rivers draining from the Western Ghats. |
